Various student unions and the teaching community of the city has termed Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s election as president on Saturday a victory for democracy, saying that he should focus on resolving the country’s major issues.
The student unions conducted rallies at The Mall to celebrate Zardari’s victory and danced to drumbeats on jubliation. The students were shouting slogans in favour of the PPP and Zardari. They were also holding posters of Zardari and the late Benazir Bhutto, which had different slogans and messages on them.
Muttahida Talaba Mahaz (MTM): Former MTM president Raheel Shah said that the MTM rallied on The Mall to celebrate Zardari’s victory. He said that the victory of Zardari would bring abou8t a revolution in the country.
University Students Federation (USF): USF Media Adviser Ahsan Chaudhry said that the USF members had celebrated Zardari’s victory at the Punjab University. He said that Zardari should review Pakistan’s relations with western countries. He said that the country’s youth was suffering from unemployment and Zardari should introduce new employment plans for the youth.
People’s Students Federation (PSF): PSP Media Co-ordinator Ali Ammar said that Zardari’s victory proved that he has a political vision for the country and that the country’s issues, including terrorism, should be resolved soon.
Student Action Committee (SAC): SAC Convener Sundas Hurrain said that Zardari should now restore the judiciary. She said that the country had struggled enough for the reinstatement of the sacked judges. She said that other than the energy crisis and the declining economy the country was also facing other issues, which should be addressed by the president.
Muslim Students Federation (MSF): MSF President Sheikh Shahid said that Zardari had become the country’s president through the democratic process. He added that Zardari’s top priority should be to restore the judiciary as soon as he has taken oath.
Insaf Student Federation (ISF): ISF Convener Rana Kamran said that now that Zardari had become president, he should declare all his assets to the nation.
Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA): PUASA President Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Salik said that Zardari should now work to strengthen the country and remove the peoples’ reservations through his policies.
Islami Jamiat Taliba (IJT): PU IJT Nazim Rana Zahid said that Zardari should now adopt democratic behaviour and take control of the country’s security situation.
