Pakistani security officials detain Mumtaz Hussain Qadri (C), one of their colleagues who allegedly killed Salman Taseer, the governor of Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab, in Islamabad, Pakistan, 04 January 2011. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on 04 January that one of the police guards of Salman Taseer killed him. The motive behind the murder reportedly was Taseer’s stance on amendments of country’s blasphemy’s laws.

Governor Punjab Salman Taseer was dead after one of his guards, named Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, opened fire on him when he was going towards his car in Kohsar Market here today.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik confirmed to the media that the guard has been arrested. He has confessed that he opened fire on the governor because of his support to Asia Bibi, he added. Asia Bibi was convicted on blasphemy.

Killing of Salman Taseer in the capital was the most high-profile assassination of a political figure in Pakistan since the slaying of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the assassination of his ally and ordered an immediate inquiry into the killing.

Interior Minister Reham Malik said Mr Taseer, 56, had been shot because of his high-profile opposition to the blasphemy laws.

But no escape from death where it is to come and when is to come it will; and one will reach there to die. This happened exactly like the Prime Minister of India was killed by her Sikh Body Guard.
